Voting for the United Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be held on Friday, January 6. The Aam Aadmi Party has fielded Shelly Oberoi and the BJP has fielded Rekha Gupta as its candidate for the post of mayor. It is almost certain that the Aam Aadmi Party, which has won a big victory in the Municipal Corporation, will be elected mayor, but in the election of the mayor, the councilors can vote for the candidate of any party as per their wish, and if they vote for the candidate of the other party, they will be punished. No action can be taken, so it will be decided only after the voting that who will become the mayor of Delhi.
Municipal affairs expert Jagdish Mamgain told Amar Ujala that 250 newly appointed corporators, seven Lok Sabha MPs, three Rajya Sabha MPs and 14 nominated members (one-fifth of the members of the Legislative Assembly, one-fifth of 70 in Delhi) are eligible for the election of the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation. Part means 14 MLAs vote for Mayor, in this 13 MLAs from Aam Aadmi Party and one MLA from BJP will vote).
The candidate who gets majority in the voting of total 274 members will be declared as the Mayor of Delhi. Since the presiding officer allows the candidates to withdraw their names even before the polling at the mayoral election, whether or not the election for the post of mayor will be decided at the very last moment. After the election of mayor, the election of deputy mayor and permanent members will also be held.
For a long time, it was a tradition in municipal corporations that the post of deputy mayor was given to the second largest party with the consent of the party that became mayor. But like the Rajya Sabha, now this healthy democratic tradition has come to an end in the Delhi Assembly or Municipal Corporations as well. Now there is a lot of tussle between political parties for the post of deputy mayor also.
